The God Delusion

Life outside of Christ is existance without purpose

A Logical Examination of Faith

Many argue that God is nothing more than a human invention—created to soothe fears, impose order, and provide comfort in the face of death. Humanity, in this view, fabricated a divine father figure to satisfy emotional needs. But does this argument hold up? Let’s examine it logically, trusting reason to take us as far as it can—without fear of where it leads.

Can Human Beings Delude Themselves?

Yes—humans are fully capable of self-deception, often believing falsehoods due to cognitive biases, emotional comfort, social pressure, or self-justification. One example is the illusory truth effect, where repeated exposure makes an idea seem true.

Critics of Christianity claim faith is self-delusion. Yet bias is universal. Believers and non-believers alike interpret reality through lenses shaped by desires and experiences. Self-deception alone cannot determine truth. “The heart is deceitful above all things…” (Jeremiah 17:9)

Common Reasons People Reject God

God as a Human-Like Figure

Some reject the Bible because God is portrayed in human terms. Scripture teaches God is spirit. Human-like descriptions accommodate our limited understanding—they are not literal depictions. “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)

Creation and the Eternal God

Another objection asks, “If God created the universe, who created God?” This assumes God must have a beginning. Christianity teaches God is eternal.

Many non-believers prefer to believe something came from nothing. They reject an eternal Creator yet accept a universe from nowhere. Perhaps the “nothing” they cling to—the eternal source they refuse to name—is the God they avoid acknowledging.

Contradictions in the Bible

Many claim the Bible contains contradictions. Yet Scripture cannot be understood through surface-level reading—it requires careful study and spiritual insight.

Seeming contradictions often reflect different perspectives, progressive revelation, or context-specific instructions. For example, the conflict between “an eye for an eye” and “turn the other cheek.” The Old Testament law revealed human imperfection and the need for God—it was never intended as a practical rule for daily life. It guides us toward a life of love, which naturally turns the other cheek. “All Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

Science over God

Science explains life as a self-replicating chemical system governed by natural laws. While powerful for understanding mechanics, science cannot answer questions of purpose, meaning, or morality.

Some hope science will answer everything, but perhaps it is being asked to do what it was never meant to do—to replace God. Unlike Santa or fairies, God troubles the conscience and demands a response. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” (Psalm 19:1)

Natural Selection over God

Natural selection describes adaptation, not the origin of complex systems. It favors traits that already exist but cannot create new, complex systems from nothing. Defining “the fittest” as those who survive can be circular reasoning and does not fully explain life’s complexity.

Religion as an Evolutionary By-Product?

Some argue religion is merely a human survival tool or a control mechanism. While it has been misused, this view assumes manipulation came first. Religion, like a gun created for protection, can be misused, but was not invented for selfish gain.

Morality Without God

Some claim humanity can be moral without God. Without Him, morality becomes subjective, defined by culture, consensus, or power. God requires perfection, not mere goodness. Anything less leads to decay and conflict. Submission to God brings lasting peace; human morality alone fosters division and suffering. “There is none righteous, not even one.” (Romans 3:10)

The Bible and Submission to Authority

Submission to authority does not mean blind obedience. Ultimate submission belongs to God alone. Christians obey laws not because governments are perfect, but because God is sovereign.

Sadly, many obey out of idol worship—of country, comfort, or stability. True submission follows God: when human authority contradicts Him, we refuse. When aligned with His will, we obey. Through prayer and obedience, we declare our allegiance to God, not men. “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)

Religion and Evil

Religion has been misused, but evil comes from the human heart, not God’s commands. Scripture calls us to love, forgive, and sacrifice. Humanity’s desire to be its own god fuels chaos. Peace is impossible when everyone rules themselves. Religion didn’t break the world; we did.

Is the God Delusion Logical?

If the Bible were invented, it would be a strange book. It humbles its authors, exposes failure, and demands surrender. Why invent a God who strips humans of power rather than elevates them? Scripture consistently tells one redemptive story across centuries, cultures, and languages—exalting God, not man.

An Honest Reflection

If I were not a believer, I do not know how I would resolve questions of existence. They are too vast for finite minds. This led me to stop searching within myself and seek answers from God.

God created us to depend on Him. If ultimate truth were within ourselves, we would think we could become gods. Humanity’s greatest deception is believing we can. Only God can reveal Himself, and when He does, truth becomes awakening. “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life.’” (John 14:6)
