" I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service."

Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Lukewarm?

So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. ~ Revelation 3:16

As a new believer, I struggled with doubt after reading Jesus' rebuke to the Laodicean church in Revelation, wondering if I was a lukewarm Christian. However, after deeper study, I realized I had misunderstood. Jesus was addressing a church of unsaved people, and the concept of a "lukewarm Christian"Is not biblical.

Jesus describes the Laodicean church as neither hot nor cold, indicating their lack of sensitivity to sin. They were caught between two worlds, trying to balance their commitment to both the world and God. Outwardly, they might have seemed faithful, but inwardly they lacked genuine conviction and dedication. These individuals were neither fully devoted to God nor completely rejecting Him, showing indifference to the things of God. Jesus condemns this state, saying He will spit them out.

Consider this analogy: as Christians, we are called to be the salt and light of the world. The Bible encourages us to let others taste and see the goodness of God through our lives, being like a refreshing drink of water for a thirsty soul. However, if someone reaches for a drink only to find it lukewarm, it’s disappointing.

Have you ever left a bottle of water in the car, only to find it lukewarm when you’re thirsty? Just as you might spit out that unsatisfying drink, Jesus rejects those who are lukewarm—those who, despite appearing outwardly religious, are not truly Christians.

The term "lukewarm Christian"Isn't found in Scripture. When God describes people as lukewarm, He also calls them blind, naked, poor, wretched, and pitiable.

In Revelation, Jesus addresses people who believe they need nothing, urging them to seek the true riches of God because they are spiritually poor. He describes them as naked, needing to be clothed in righteousness. The clearest indication that they are unsaved is when Jesus says He stands at the door and knocks, waiting to be invited in—meaning He is outside their lives. Jesus warns, “Because you are lukewarm, I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”

It’s not just about being lukewarm—it’s about the deeper spiritual poverty that comes with it. Think about it: in what way would you want Jesus to spit you out? A "lukewarm" person is, ultimately, an unsaved person.

You are not lukewarm if you feel profound discomfort and conviction when you sin or compromise your faith. Those who experience this internal struggle recognize their need for God's forgiveness and are committed to restoring their relationship with Him. They show genuine sensitivity to God’s ways and are motivated to align their lives with His will. They earnestly seek to serve, follow, and honor God with all their heart, even though, like all Christians, they may stumble at times.

For those who are lukewarm, it would be better to choose a side—either be on fire for God or fully embrace disbelief. At least then you’ll know where you stand. Stop deceiving yourself by trying to play both sides. You can’t serve two masters; you must choose to serve either God or Satan.
