God
The One From Whom Everything Begins
There is drinking water—but what holds that drinking water? A cup. But what holds up the cup? A table. What holds up the table? A house. And what holds up the house? The earth. We can keep going, tracing one thing back to another.
But eventually, we have to ask: What is holding everything up? What is the foundation beneath it all?
What About the Logos?
There is love, truth, morality, language, reason, and everything else we experience in creation. But where did these things begin? Where did the very foundations of our existence come from?
Like an onion, you can keep peeling back the layers of creation. You can keep asking, Where did that come from? And then, where did that come from? But eventually, there had to be a beginning. There cannot be an endless chain of causes with no starting point. There had to be something—or Someone—that existed before everything else.
That beginning is God.
The Bible begins with the words, “In the beginning was the Word” (John 1:1). The Greek word translated “Word” is Logos. The Logos is not merely an idea, a force, or an abstract principle. John reveals that the Logos was with God and that the Logos was God.
God is spirit, and we are limited, finite creatures. We cannot fully comprehend who God is. It would be like a three-year-old child trying to understand Albert Einstein—but even that comparison falls far short. The difference between a finite human mind and the infinite God is far greater.
Yet God has made Himself known to us.
We can understand that God is the source and foundation of all that exists. He is the embodiment of love, truth, righteousness, wisdom, and justice. Everything that is good finds its ultimate source in Him. From Him everything began, and by Him everything continues to exist.
God is perfect—perfectly wise, perfectly loving, and perfectly just. He is all-knowing and all-powerful. He is not merely part of creation or one explanation among many. He is the foundation upon which everything else rests.
Everything we see, everything we know, and everything we are ultimately points back to Him.
God is the foundation. There is no foundation beneath Him.
Creation
Out of His great love, God created humanity. He did not create us because He lacked something or needed something to complete Himself. God was already complete. Rather, He chose to create and to share His goodness, His love, and His glory with His creation.
To His creation, He is Father, Creator, King, Master, Ruler, Leader, and Counselor. And among all that God has created, humanity holds a unique place. We are His. We were created in His image, given the ability to know Him, love Him, and reflect something of who He is.
The more we allow God to work through us, the more His character—His love, truth, goodness, and righteousness—can be reflected in our lives.
This section is a journey into discovering who God is, what He is like, and what it means for us to know the One who created us.
