"We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek."

– Hebrews 6:19-20

Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.

The Impossibility of Hebrews 6:4
For it is Impossible

Many people have read this passage in Hebrews and found themselves confused and deeply concerned. Some struggle to understand the author's intent—whom I believe to be the Apostle Paul. Hebrews 6:4 has sparked significant discussion and worry among sincere Christians, with some even fearing they may have lost their opportunity for salvation.

To understand this properly, we must first look back at the earlier chapters and remember whom Paul was addressing: Jewish Christians, or Hebrews, who were enduring persecution and struggling with their faith.

In Hebrews 6, Paul urges them to grow spiritually, stating, "Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity" (Hebrews 6:1).

To summarize Paul's message: There is no need to repeatedly return to repentance for salvation. If you have truly repented and experienced God's goodness, and shared in the Holy Spirit, it's time to move beyond the basics of salvation and delve into the deeper aspects of your relationship with Him. True repentance isn’t about redoing your salvation; it’s about restoring and deepening your relationship with God. If you have genuinely been saved, it is impossible to "re-crucify" Christ by constantly seeking salvation. If you find yourself falling away, don’t repent for salvation again, but for the damage to your relationship with God. Learn, grow, and restore that connection.

For those who have never truly tasted the goodness of God, experienced genuine salvation, or shared in the Holy Spirit, repentance is needed—not for a salvation you’ve supposedly already received, but to realize you were never saved in the first place.

In my time working in ministry, I’ve witnessed countless people who seem unable to move past the basics of salvation and repentance. Every time there was an altar call, a practice I’m not particularly fond of, I’d see these individuals at the front, supposedly repenting and recommitting their lives to Christ. I could almost hear Paul’s words echoing to them: “If you are truly saved and have the Holy Spirit, stop coming up here. It’s impossible and illogical to crucify Christ again. If you’ve never felt the Holy Spirit, it’s time to examine your heart and motivations to ensure you genuinely desire salvation.”

It’s crucial for us to gain assurance of our salvation in Jesus so we can progress in our walk with Him. If we’re uncertain about our standing with God, we must earnestly seek Him and ask for clarity. Once we come to an understanding of where we truly stand, we can experience true repentance and move forward, instead of remaining stuck in a cycle of futile acts.
