Who Defines You?
Let me share a story about a woman named Martha. She decided to lose weight for health reasons, so she adopted a healthier diet and began a workout routine. Every morning and night, she would weigh herself, but her frustration grew as her weight fluctuated dramatically, showing extreme highs without any clear cause. Confused and discouraged, Martha visited her doctor. To her astonishment, the nurse's scale displayed a weight significantly lower than her home scale. Even after a second weigh-in, the reading remained the same. Martha realized that her home scale was broken, providing inaccurate readings all along.
Just as Martha's scale was faulty, each of us is like a broken scale in need of Godly repair. Our limited perspective gives us only a partial view of reality. Our understanding and judgments are often flawed because of this inherent brokenness.
We should never let others' opinions or actions define us. When we do, we relinquish our power and control to them, basing our worth on their judgments. This means we measure ourselves by their flawed standards, living according to their broken scale.
The challenge arises because we deeply crave love, acceptance, and approval. We place undue importance on the validation of this broken scale, seeking its affirmation to feel valued.
What we must understand is that our desire for acceptance comes from our flesh. This craving arises from having turned away from God’s true scale. By rejecting God, we create a void that makes us needy and self-centered, constantly seeking attention. We cling to the broken scale because it aligns with our desire for a version of the truth that satisfies our flesh. While a true scale reveals reality, our flesh hopes that its chosen scale will provide a result that caters to its needs. In reality, we’re not seeking true change; we’re looking for acceptance to feel better.
Measuring ourselves by others will always give us a distorted view—whether positive or negative, it remains untrue. Only God can offer accurate validation of who we are. Our true measure comes from Him alone, as His love is unwavering and His judgments are always just. God will never provide an inaccurate reading. Only God should define us.
