Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!
An airplane relies on a magnetic compass to stay on course, guiding it through the skies and keeping it aligned with the right heading. In the same way, our lives need direction—and God is the only true compass who can keep us on the right path. Without Him, we inevitably lose our way.
When God isn't at the center, we replace Him with things that throw us off balance—ourselves, other people, material possessions. These substitutes weigh us down, distort our direction, and ultimately lead us astray.
Without God, we try to navigate life on our own, placing ourselves at the center. We stand in His place, unknowingly blocking our view of the deep need we have for Him to pilot our lives.
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6)
We turn inward, chasing happiness through self-fulfillment. We turn outward, making idols of those around us—our spouses become our gods, our children our possessions, and our jobs or material things our identity. But none of these can sustain us. They are flawed, just like we are. And when they fail to meet our expectations, we clash, we fight, we pull on each other—because we’re all trying to satisfy a need only God was meant to fulfill.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)
When God enters our lives, He opens our eyes to a vital truth—we’re not capable of piloting our own lives. This realization humbles us. It shifts our focus away from ourselves and places God back at the center, as the true compass guiding our every step.
With God as our guide, we can love genuinely, share freely, comfort others, teach with grace, and extend the same mercy that He so generously gives to us.
Until God becomes the compass of our lives, we’ll continue to drift off course. We’ll stumble, fall, and lead others astray. But when He leads, He becomes the Spirit who guides us, the referee who corrects us, the mediator who restores us, and the light that keeps us—and those around us—from losing our way.
“Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life.’” (John 14:6)
