Wouldn’t It Be Beautiful?

The body of Christ

The Beauty of a Church Alive in the World

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” — Matthew 5:14

I’ve attended many churches and heard countless sermons reminding us that the church is not a building but the body of Christ—that God has called believers to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth, to serve others, and to live mission-minded lives.

I often feel inspired—until the message suddenly shifts. The pastor then says there are “many opportunities to serve here at the church,” turning what began as a call to kingdom service into a call for church maintenance.

The Focus of the Church

Should we serve within the church? Absolutely—if we’re called to. But that should never be the main focus. When we frame the message this way, we risk making the institution more important than the mission. Some are called to serve inside the church, but most are called to serve outside of it. Sadly, we’ve reached a point where preserving the institution often takes priority over shining the light of Christ into the world.

Here’s the hard truth: we don’t need an institutional church. The Bible never commands us to build church buildings—it calls us, as believers, to gather together in fellowship and unity. (Hebrews 10:24–25)

The Living Church

Imagine if one day the government outlawed church buildings. Would that mean the Church is dead? Sadly, for many, it might feel that way, because so much of modern Christianity depends on the institution rather than the Spirit. But in reality, the Church would still be alive—because as long as the body of Christ exists, so does the Church. (Matthew 16:18)

Now, am I saying we should shut down churches or stop opening them altogether? Of course not. We should be grateful for churches that genuinely aim to help believers grow in faith and be the light and salt of the world. But we must remember this truth: the Church isn’t confined to four walls. Wherever believers gather in Christ’s name—that’s where the Church truly is. (Matthew 18:20)

A Vision for the Church

If I had a church—and I don’t, and won’t, which I’m sure would make many people happy—I wouldn’t mind at all if members decided to leave and start gatherings in their homes throughout the neighborhood. In fact, I’d rejoice in it.

Wouldn’t it be beautiful?

To see believers stepping out of church buildings to start home fellowships—wouldn’t it be beautiful? To see Christians working not just to earn money for themselves, but to use their resources to further God’s kingdom. Wouldn’t it be beautiful to see followers of Christ spending time together in their neighborhoods, glorifying God and inviting their unbelieving neighbors to join them?

The Church Alive

Imagine it—a true community of Christ, alive and active in the world. Not locked away behind the walls of an institutional church, but living and breathing the gospel wherever they are.

I know many in the church would call me naive, saying that with this kind of mindset, the church could never survive. But honestly, I wouldn’t care. If the church is to stand, let it be because God sustains it—not because of human effort or strategy. And if it must close its doors, so be it.

For if a church isn’t reaching its neighborhood or shining its light into the world, how can it truly claim to be the salt and light Jesus spoke of? (Matthew 5:13–16)

The True Church

Sadly, much of the modern church is doing exactly what God warned us not to do—hiding its light under a bushel, losing its flavor, and becoming good for nothing.

Wouldn’t it be beautiful if the world could look at us—not at our buildings or programs—but at our lives, and see Jesus reflected there?

That’s the Church Christ died for.

A people, not a place.
A movement, not a meeting.
A light that cannot be hidden, shining brightly in every home, every street, and every heart that belongs to Him.

Let the Church Rise

The time has come for the Church to rise—not in numbers or buildings, but in power, purity, and purpose. Let the walls fall if they must. Let traditions crumble if they stand in the way of truth. Because the Church of Jesus Christ will never die—it lives wherever His people walk in love, speak His truth, and bear His light to a darkened world.

Maybe this is what Jesus envisioned all along—not crowds gathered around a stage, but hearts gathered around His name. Not the echo of sermons within walls, but the sound of praise in living rooms and streets.

“For where two or three gather in My name, there am I in the midst of them.” — Matthew 18:20

Wouldn’t it be beautiful if that became our reality?
