"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

– Romans 12:2

The Truth of Life
Finding God's Will For My Life

Like everyone else, I've wrestled with discovering God's will for my life. We've all faced those familiar questions—Which job should I take? Who should I marry? Which path should I follow? Life can often feel like a hallway lined with countless doors, each one a possible future. And sometimes, having so many choices can leave us feeling stuck, unsure of which way to go. God's will can seem like a mystery we’re meant to solve. So how do we begin to uncover it?

We start with what we already know through Scripture.

God Cares More About Who We Are Than What We Do or Have

Who We Are

The first thing to understand is that God cares more about who we are becoming than what we do. Are we becoming more like Christ? Are we bearing the fruit of the Spirit? Are we living as light and salt in the world? Ultimately, are we living a life that brings glory to Him?

What We Do

While who we are matters most, God also cares deeply about what we do. Are we seeking Him with all our hearts? Are we living a surrendered, obedient life? Are we praying, studying, and meditating on His Word? Are we denying the ways of this world—refusing to be conformed to it—and instead being transformed by the renewing of our minds, so that we may discern what is the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God? Are we abiding in Christ, resting in Him, and making Him the true pursuit of our hearts? And ultimately, are we living in a way that builds and contributes to God's Kingdom?

What We Have

God also cares about what we have—and how we use it. Are we glorifying Him with the gifts, talents, jobs, relationships, and material blessings He’s entrusted to us? Do we recognize that our possessions, careers, and finances are not the end goal, but simply tools—means to an end—to help us shine His light and be salt to the world around us?

God's Will Unfolded

Imagine standing before three doors, knowing you must choose one. How do the principles above help you decide? When your heart, mind, and spirit are truly aligned with God—when you're seeking Him fully, living in obedience, and walking closely with Christ—you can pray, take a step of faith, and walk through one of those doors, trusting that God will close the wrong ones and guide you toward the right one.

Yes, there will be times when we act on impulse or emotion, choosing our own way rather than God’s. But if we remain committed to those foundational truths, we can trust that God will open our eyes, soften our hearts, and lovingly redirect us. Until we return to His will, we’ll lack true joy and bear little fruit.

The Mystery Has a Purpose

I once heard a pastor say that God's will isn't a mystery because He's given us the wisdom to make our own choices. But I respectfully disagree. I believe God's will is a mystery—and that mystery is intentional. It serves a greater purpose.

True wisdom isn’t about believing we can make the right choices on our own; it's recognizing our human limitations and learning to follow the One who is limitless—God, who sees the full picture and makes far better choices than we ever could.

The reason His will is often hidden is because God ultimately desires relationship, not just direction. He wants us to depend on Him with childlike faith. And as we live out the principles above—seeking Him with our hearts, renewing our minds, and abiding in His Spirit—we grow in that relationship. And it’s through that relationship that the mystery of His will slowly begins to unfold in our lives.

In the end, His will isn't about figuring out every detail—it's about faithfully following the One who already knows the way.
