If I Were the Enemy

The Father of Lies, the Father of Love: Understanding the Battle for Our Hearts

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself: If I were the enemy of God, what would I do? How would I oppose Him? How would I come against His people? What strategies would I use?

Satan isn’t concerned with being liked or accepted. He doesn’t want your friendship. His goal is simple: to draw you away from God and keep you in darkness. Whether you love him or hate him doesn’t matter—so long as you are deceived and separated from the truth.

If we truly understood this, we would think more carefully. What tactics would an enemy like that use? How would he work—subtly, patiently, and effectively—to lead people away from God without them even realizing it?

Blinded

First, I would hide the very idea of a spiritual world. I wouldn’t care whether you believed in me—so long as you didn’t believe in God.

How?
I would keep your eyes fixed on this world, so you never look beyond it. I would keep you busy—like a rat in a maze—chasing money, pleasure, success, fame, relationships, and endless entertainment. If I could keep you distracted, I could keep you unaware.

And if constant pleasure didn’t work, I would use pressure. I would let difficulty, pain, and frustration fill your life—just enough to consume your thoughts. I would plant a quiet lie: “If God were real, and if He truly loved you, you wouldn’t feel this way.”

Then I would deepen the confusion. I would flood your mind with noise—opinions, arguments, and endless information. I wouldn’t need to convince you of one clear lie; overwhelming you with confusion is enough.

Because if you are distracted, discouraged, and confused…
You will remain blind.

Scriptures:
2 Corinthians 4:4 – “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers...”
Matthew 13:22 – “The worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word...”
John 8:44 – “He is a liar and the father of lies.”

Better for You

If you ever did accept the idea of God and Satan, I wouldn’t try to convince you that I don’t exist. Instead, I would convince you that I am better for you.

I would present myself as the one who truly understands you, who wants what you want, who can give you what God seems to withhold. I would make God appear restrictive—distant, controlling, even selfish. Then I would whisper that you could become more on your own—that you could shape your identity, define your truth, and rise into something greater. Freedom. Empowerment. Becoming the best version of yourself.

But it would be a lie. What I offer can never deliver what it promises. It only pulls you further from the One who is truly good—the One who gives life, not takes it.

Scriptures:
Genesis 3:4-5 – “You will not surely die… you will be like God...”
James 1:14-15 – “Each person is tempted when they are dragged away...”
John 10:10 – “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy...”

Build You Up

I would make you believe you are the center of the world. Everything should revolve around you. You could do anything you want, and the world exists to serve your desires.

I would flatter you, shower you with affection that feels real but isn’t—the kind of love that deceives because it satisfies the need for God’s true love without ever giving it. I would make you think you can become anything you imagine—whatever suits your whims.

I would build you up, feed your pride and illusions, make you feel invincible—like Superman, ruler of your own world—until the day comes when you fall. And in that moment, the truth hits: you cannot fly, and nothing I promised was real.

Scriptures:
Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction...”
Galatians 6:3 – “If anyone thinks they are something when they are not...”
1 John 2:16 – “The pride of life comes not from the Father...”

Bombard You

I would overwhelm you with endless information, distractions, and noise—and make it all seem urgent. I would twist your perspective so what truly matters feels insignificant, and what is temporary and empty feels essential.

Life would become a constant chase after money, entertainment, and digital stimulation. I would make you believe this is the life you need, the life you want, the life you cannot live without. And if you fall behind, I would convince you that you are missing out, failing, or losing everything that matters.

Scriptures:
Luke 10:41-42 – “You are worried and upset about many things...”
Ecclesiastes 1:8 – “The eye never has enough of seeing...”
Colossians 3:2 – “Set your minds on things above...”

Build Your Own Kingdom

I would persuade you to build your own kingdom—carefully shaping it into something that feels right to you. I would have you fill it with possessions, family, and the people you love, so that your heart becomes deeply attached to it.

Whatever form your kingdom takes, I would make it feel like home—so comfortable, so familiar, that leaving it would seem unthinkable. And in time, that comfort would quietly become a prison—one you cannot escape, or worse, one you no longer desire to leave.

Whether I convince you that this kingdom is the world, your own small world, or anything apart from God’s kingdom, I will have succeeded.

Scriptures:
Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV): "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves
Luke 12:15 (NIV): "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions."

The Great Deception

I would counterfeit myself as God. I would take His Word and twist it in ways you could never detect unless you were intimately close to Him. I would craft false stories that mimic His truth, leaving you confused, uncertain, and vulnerable.

I would convince people they are following God when, in reality, they are following me. I would raise up preachers who unknowingly lead you into my snares. I would take goats and dress them as sheep—those who appear godly but serve only me. These impostors and hypocrites would make God seem harsh, distant, weak, unloving, or unfaithful—giving unbelievers “proof” to doubt Him. False sheep that look like the world and smell like the world, yet strive to convince others they are not of it.

I would lure you back into works, rituals, religion, and empty service, convincing you that your salvation depends on them. I would make it seem simple: a prayer, church attendance, or outward dedication is enough. I would twist God’s Word to appear sufficient, obscuring the truth—that salvation comes only through Christ.

Scriptures:
2 Corinthians 11:13-15 (NIV): "For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light."
Matthew 7:15 (NIV): "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves."

Father vs. Enemy

If you’ve seen a child caught between a divorcing couple, you can understand what the enemy does. One parent may indulge the child to win favor, letting them have anything while the other parent sets limits. The indulgent parent isn’t loving—they are manipulative, seeking to make the other look bad.

Satan works similarly. He tempts us with pleasure, indulgence, and ease to win our hearts, not for our good, but to oppose God. We often don’t see it because his lies are dazzling. But anyone who has spoiled a child knows: give them everything they want, and they become insatiable, impossible to satisfy, and ultimately trapped by their own desires.

God, in contrast, calls us to trust Him. His love is steady, courageous, and life-giving. He may set limits and ask us to wait or endure hardship—but always for our ultimate good. His truth frees, even when it challenges, and His guidance leads to lasting joy.

Scriptures:
Hebrews 12:6 – “The Lord disciplines the one He loves...”
John 8:32 – “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Matthew 7:11 – “How much more will your Father... give good gifts...”

The Goal

My goal is to addict you to everything but God. I would tempt you with comfort so seductive that you would cling to it, unwilling to let go—even if it meant being torn from this world. If comfort fails, I would turn to pain, sowing frustration, bitterness, and anger so that you might reject or even hate God.

I would manipulate you into building a life so carefully constructed that the thought of rebuilding would feel unbearable. I would lie, steal, cheat—anything I could get away with—to keep you trapped in my schemes. I would fill your mind with endless noise, a million distracting voices, so you could no longer hear God’s still, small whisper. I would whisper lies into your ears, making you feel shameful, worthless, and unworthy—especially in the sight of a perfect God.

If I am to spend eternity in hell, I will drag you down with me if I can—ensuring you lose alongside me, and that God never claims your heart.

The Choice

We live in a world that confuses mercy with indulgence and pleasure with life. But God’s love is steadfast and courageous, unwavering in truth and goodness. The enemy tempts with easy pleasures, but God offers what truly makes us whole.

Understanding this changes everything. Seeing the enemy’s strategies helps us resist, and embracing God’s love leads us into freedom, joy, and life that cannot be taken away.

The enemy seeks to blind, distract, and deceive. God seeks to reveal, guide, and restore. Understanding the difference gives us the power to choose life over lies.

Have the enemy’s promises or temptations ever truly delivered what they promised? Their failure is proof of their deceit. Turn to God, and see that His Word is faithful, true, and life-giving.

Scriptures:
Deuteronomy 30:19 – “I have set before you life and death... now choose life.”
1 Peter 5:8 – “Your enemy the devil prowls around...”
James 4:7 – “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
