What We Are Fighting For
The Christian Path
Soldiers of Christ: Why We Fight
Christians, before Jesus found us, we were lost—blind and stumbling in the darkness of ignorance. But then He came, shining His light into our lives, revealing our sinful state and the path we were on—one that led to eternal separation from God. In His mercy, He showed us the door to life. Jesus entered this world, resisted its temptations, and gave up His life so that we might be saved. He rescued us from the prison of darkness, opened the way to true freedom, and now calls us to do the same for others.
“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” — John 15:13
So what are we fighting for?
We are fighting for those who are still bound by this world—those blind and lost in the shadows. We give up our lives for them because Christ gave up His life for us.
If we are reluctant to accept the call to die to ourselves, to become soldiers for Christ as He was for the Father, and to enter the battle of faith—then we’ve missed the weight of His sacrifice. This is not a light thing.
“Endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please Him who enlisted him as a soldier.” — 2 Timothy 2:3–4
I often think about those who fought in the Vietnam War. Many were drafted into a battle they didn’t believe in. They came home wounded, broken, and haunted—victims of a war they never chose. But then there were others who believed in the cause. They returned with honor—not because they avoided suffering, but because they embraced sacrifice. They were willing to leave everything behind for a greater purpose, even laying down their lives for others.
Christians, we are called to that same kind of resolve. We are soldiers in a spiritual war—called to forsake this world and give our lives for the sake of another. But unlike Vietnam, this is not a war of uncertainty. Christ has already secured the victory. We are not fighting aimlessly; we fight for the kingdom of God, for the souls of men and women, and for the glory of Christ.
“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” — Romans 8:37
We are not victims of our faith—we are victors through it, because the One who called us has already won.

- Busyness or fear cannot replace daily dying to self and walking as soldiers of Christ.
- Our war is spiritual, not uncertain—Jesus has already secured the victory.
- We are “more than conquerors” through Him (Romans 8:37).
